League phase, 2026/27. Ordered as published after 3 matches per club. Form shows up to the last five results, W won, D drawn, L lost.

The league phase replaced the group stage and puts every club in one table. Each club plays 8 matches against 8 different opponents, so no two clubs have the same schedule, and the table can only be compared fairly once all 8 matchdays are in.

How the table is divided

The top eight go straight into the round of 16, the clubs from ninth to 24th play two-legged knockout play-offs for the other eight places, and everything from 25th downwards is out of European competition for the season.

1 – 8Round of 16Qualified automatically
9 – 24Knockout play-offsTwo-legged ties
25 – 36Eliminated12 clubs leave European competition

After 3 matches the eighth place in the published order belongs to Barcelona on 6 points, and Como are ninth on 6 points, level on points, separated by the tie-break criteria. The line between the play-offs and elimination runs between LASK (shown as 24th, on 3 points) and Sabah (shown as 25th, on 3 points).

The Champions League is the highest-ranked of the three men's club competitions, and the allocation of its places is the reason the country ranking exists. A club's league phase points do not feed only its own table: they are also added to the coefficient of its association.

Analysis

The race to qualify

Around the cut line

The clubs in places 21 to 28 of the published order span 0 points, from 3 to 3. Man Utd (20th, 3 points, goal difference -1); Napoli (22nd, 3 points, goal difference -2); Galatasaray (23rd, 3 points, goal difference -3); LASK (24th, 3 points, goal difference -3); Sabah (25th, 3 points, goal difference -3); Feyenoord (26th, 3 points, goal difference -4); Lens (27th, 3 points, goal difference -4); Bodø/Glimt (28th, 3 points, goal difference -5).

The line that matters in the lower half falls after the 24th club in the published order. LASK, shown as 24th, are last inside it on 3 points, and Sabah, shown as 25th, are first outside it on 3 points. The two are level on points, so the tie-break criteria decide which of them is inside the line. Each club still has 5 matches to play in the league phase.

What the numbers show

54 of the 144 league-phase matches have been played so far, with 221 goals, or 4.09 per match. Home sides have won 32, 6 have been drawn and visitors have won 16. The widest margin is Aston Villa 6–0 Fenerbahçe. The match with the most goals is LASK 3–6 Liverpool.

Strength on paper and position in the table are not the same thing this early. The eight best-placed clubs have an average club coefficient of 100.969, while the twelve lowest-placed clubs average 42.729, so the order of the table so far follows the order of the coefficients. The club coefficients are listed on the club coefficient page.

Which associations are represented

The 36 clubs come from 16 associations. England has 5, Spain has 5, Germany has 4, Italy has 4, France has 3. Of those, the association with the most league-phase points so far is England, on 34 points from its clubs combined. The association totals are in the country ranking.

How to read the projection

A simulation of the matches still to be played, repeated 6,000 times, gives each club a chance of finishing in the top eight, which means a place in the round of 16, and in the top 24, which means at least the play-offs. Paris (90%), Real Madrid (89%), Liverpool (81%), Aston Villa (72%), Arsenal (70%), Real Betis (63%) are among the clubs with at least an even chance of the top eight.

The play-off line is still open for Napoli (72% to reach the top 24), Bodø/Glimt (72% to reach the top 24), Feyenoord (68% to reach the top 24), Como (68% to reach the top 24), Man Utd (63% to reach the top 24), Villarreal (62% to reach the top 24). 1 club has a chance of ten percent or less of finishing in the top 24, among them Viking.

The match probabilities behind the projection come from a rating model based on club coefficients. On 172 completed matches that were kept aside while it was being set up, its score was 9.3% better than a baseline of overall home, draw and away shares, and it picked the right outcome 56% of the time. With only 3 matches played the projection is wide, and it narrows as the phase goes on. It does not replace the table: it is a view of how the table could end.
